OPG Scan Birmingham

An OPG (orthopantomogram) is a panoramic dental X-ray that shows all teeth, both jaws and surrounding bone in a single image. At Birmingham CBCT & OPG Hub, we provide fast, accurate OPG scans for patients and referring dentists across Birmingham and the West Midlands. All scans are taken at our imaging centre at 341 Birmingham Road, Great Barr, Birmingham B43 7AP.

What is an OPG scan?

An OPG is a wide panoramic X-ray used to assess teeth, bone levels, wisdom teeth, missing teeth and general jaw health. It is quick, comfortable and captures essential diagnostic information in a single 2D image.

OPG scans are often used before orthodontic treatment, extractions, dentures, dental implants and general dental assessment. For cases requiring more detail, we also offer CBCT 3D scanning, with careful attention to radiation safety.

Why dentists request OPG scans

OPG scans help with diagnosis, treatment planning and monitoring. They are commonly used for:

  • Wisdom teeth assessment
  • Orthodontic planning
  • General overview before treatment
  • Missing or unerupted teeth
  • Periodontal bone levels
  • TMJ overview
  • Dentures or full-mouth planning
  • Baseline dental health records

OPG vs CBCT – which do I need?

An OPG gives a broad overview of the jaws in 2D. It is ideal for general assessment and early planning. A CBCT scan, however, provides a 3D view with significantly more detail.

Your dentist may request a CBCT scan afterwards if additional information is required for implants, surgical cases or complex diagnoses. You can learn more on our dedicated page for CBCT scans in Birmingham.

Information for referring dentists

We welcome OPG referrals from any dental practice. You can submit referrals online, upload previous X-rays and notes, and receive secure digital images. Our OPG and CBCT price list makes it easy to discuss fees with patients.

If more detail is required after an OPG, we can provide a CBCT scan on the same day where appropriate. To refer a patient now, please use our online referral form.

Most patients attend following referral, but you may contact us directly and we will guide you on the correct pathway.

Will I receive the images?
