CBCT Scan Birmingham

CBCT scans provide highly detailed 3D imaging of the jaws, bone, teeth and surrounding structures. At Birmingham CBCT & OPG Hub, we offer fast, accurate imaging for dental implants, wisdom teeth, endodontics, oral surgery and complex assessment. All scans are taken at our centre at 341 Birmingham Road, Great Barr, Birmingham B43 7AP, with quick turnaround and clear, easy-to-read datasets for both patients and referring dentists.

What is a CBCT scan?

A Cone Beam CT (CBCT) scan captures a 3D image of the teeth, jaws, sinuses and surrounding anatomy. It provides far more detail than a standard dental X-ray and is now considered essential for many implant, endodontic, orthodontic and surgical treatments.

We offer small, medium and large fields-of-view depending on your dentist’s requirements, following IRMER regulations and the ALARA principle (as low as reasonably achievable). You can read more about our approach to radiation safety and patient protection.

Why dentists request CBCT scans

CBCT scanning helps improve safety, accuracy and planning for many treatments:

CBCT scans allow accurate measurement of bone height, bone width, angulation and proximity to vital structures. This improves implant planning and safety. We supply datasets compatible with all major planning software.

A 3D scan helps determine whether lower wisdom tooth roots are close to the inferior alveolar nerve. This reduces surgical risk and helps dentists choose the safest approach.

CBCT Birmingham – FAQs

How long does a CBCT scan take?

The scan itself usually takes under one minute. Your full appointment is normally around 10–15 minutes, including positioning and checking image quality.

Is a CBCT scan safe?

Yes. The radiation dose is low and kept to the minimum required for diagnostic quality. We follow IRMER guidelines and justify every scan individually, with careful attention to radiation safety.

Do I need a dentist referral?

Most patients attend following referral, but you may contact us directly and we will guide you on the correct pathway.

Will I receive the scan images?

Yes. You or your dentist will receive the DICOM files along with viewing software and, if requested, a radiology report.

Can CBCT replace a normal X-ray?

No — CBCT is used only when necessary and when the additional detail changes treatment planning.
